Our body is the most amazing and efficient machine with a well-built self-maintenance mechanism by the Lord.
Antioxidants are produced in our body to maintain our body. They can also be obtained from foods to some extent.
Antioxidants play an important role in protecting our body’s cells from being damaged by harmful free radicals.

What are free radicals?

Antioxidants are unstable molecules that are naturally found when we exercise and when our bodies convert food into energy.

Free radicals can cause oxidative stress resulting in cell damage and age-related muscular degeneration.

Being very active they easily combine with antioxidants

But if this isn’t possible they build up together and cause a condition known as oxidative stress.

This oxidative stress causes an imbalance between oxidants and free radicals. When this oxidative stress becomes chronic it leads to chronic diseases.

Harmful effects when they interact chemically

Cell damage and tissue damage.

Interaction with proteins

Cancer.

Heart disease

Neurological disease

Lung disease

Rheumatoid arthritis.

Nephropathy.

The molecules are unstable.

But when antioxidants react with free radicals they stabilize the free radicals without destabilizing them.

Some plant-based foods are the best sources of high antioxidants-

Strawberries, raspberries, beets, spinach, beans, seeds, whole grains, nuts, herbs, spices, phytonutrients contain anthocyanins and beta carotene which are rich in antioxidants.

Strawberries contain anthocyanins – reduces the risk of heart disease. A diet high in vegetables and fruits is a good source of antioxidants found to be healthy.

Examples of antioxidants are vit.c, vit.E, selenium and carotenoids. People who eat it have a lower risk of many diseases.

High doses of antioxidant supplements can also be harmful. As-vit E- bleeding, stroke. In people, taking high doses of blood thinners causes bleeding.

Smoking High beta carotene Cancer risk. In some circumstances free radicals may actually be beneficial rather than harmful and their removal may be undesirable.
